ICNAS is a medical imaging research institution of the University of Coimbra that congregates the main medical imaging modalities (PET, MRI, CT, EEG) in the same building, including cyclotron and radiochemistry facilities. The following is an edited excerpt of the interview with Ivanna Hrynchak, doctoral student at ICNAS-Produção conducted on 24th November 2020.

What makes therapeutic mAbs an essential part of your doctoral program?

The objective of my research is to synthesize a radiolabelled antibody against HER2 for non-invasive imaging and therapeutic purposes. Trastuzumab is utilized for this purpose because of its affinity for the HER2 receptor. Hence, trastuzumab is used for the optimization of reaction conditions and subsequent purification. In order to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of radiolabelled trastuzumab in vitro and in vivo models, the mAB used must be classified as an Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API).

What challenges did you face in finding Therapeutic anti-HER2 antibodies?

Several companies sell mAbs. However, I required an approved therapeutic mAb for my reaction optimization and quality control. I had very limited choices and it was difficult to find good deals which were cost effective and offered an ideal pack size.
